How Does ‘S.W.A.T.’ Series Finale End? Does Anyone Leave 20-Squad?
The series finale of S.W.A.T. ends with action, emotion, and a message of loyalty that longtime fans found both satisfying and bittersweet. After years of cancellation scares and emotional storylines, the final episode — titled “Return to Base” — closes the chapter on 20-Squad without completely destroying the team fans grew to love.
The finale centers around a massive threat involving a dangerous Russian mercenary group called Red Sword. The criminals plant hidden landmines across Los Angeles while trying to eliminate Dmitri Rykov, a captured operative tied to an international prisoner exchange. The situation quickly spirals into one of the most intense missions the team has ever faced.
At the same time, there is major emotional tension inside 20-Squad itself.
The biggest internal conflict involves Gamble, played by Annie Ilonzeh. In the episode before the finale, Gamble secretly lets her brother escape after discovering he was connected to a criminal operation. When she admits the truth to Hondo, he questions whether he can still trust her as part of the team. Feeling guilty and ashamed, Gamble decides to transfer out of 20-Squad.
That decision shocks the rest of the team.
Characters like Tan argue that Gamble is family and deserves support rather than rejection. But Hondo initially remains cold and disappointed, believing she crossed a dangerous line by choosing blood over duty. The emotional divide creates one of the finale’s strongest storylines because it forces Hondo to confront his own leadership style.
Things become even more intense when Red Sword attacks S.W.A.T. headquarters directly.
Gamble returns to HQ simply to collect her belongings, but she unexpectedly gets trapped inside during the assault. Despite no longer officially being part of the squad, she risks her life to protect Hondo and the others. Meanwhile, the rest of 20-Squad fights outside while Hondo battles Rykov in a brutal hand-to-hand confrontation inside the building.
In classic S.W.A.T. fashion, the team ultimately works together to stop the attack and save the city one final time.
After surviving the mission, Hondo realizes he handled Gamble’s situation poorly. In one of the finale’s most emotional scenes, he tells her not to transfer after all. He admits that instead of helping her through a painful family crisis, he pushed her away. Hondo calls her “the missing piece” of the team and tells her she belongs in 20-Squad. Gamble decides to stay.
So, does anyone actually leave 20-Squad permanently in the finale?
Surprisingly, no major member leaves by the very end.
Although the season had already seen several emotional exits and cast changes leading into the finale, the final episode itself chooses unity rather than separation. Gamble stays. Tan remains with the squad even after accepting a new responsibility as S.W.A.T.’s mayoral liaison. Hondo continues leading the team. Deacon also remains emotionally connected to the squad despite reflecting heavily on family and the future.
One of the most touching moments comes from Deacon, played by Jay Harrington. After receiving money from a business deal, he decides not to spend it on himself. Instead, he buys custom watches for every member of 20-Squad engraved with the phrase “Stay Liquid,” symbolizing the team’s bond and shared journey.
The series closes on an emotional but hopeful note.
Hondo begins giving a heartfelt speech about what the team means to him and how much they have survived together. Before he can finish, the squad receives another emergency call about a robbery in progress. Without hesitation, they gear up and head back into action one final time.
That ending was very intentional.
Showrunner Andrew Dettmann explained that the creators wanted viewers to feel like 20-Squad would continue protecting Los Angeles even after the cameras stopped rolling. Instead of ending with tragedy or dramatic goodbyes, the finale suggests the team’s mission never truly ends.
Some fans loved this approach because it preserved the spirit of the show. Others wished the finale had included more surprise returns from former fan-favorite characters like Street, Chris, or Luca. Across Reddit and social media, many viewers said the ending felt emotionally satisfying but slightly incomplete without a full reunion of the classic squad.
Still, most fans agreed the finale captured what made S.W.A.T. special for eight seasons: teamwork, loyalty, emotional resilience, and family.
And now, with ongoing rumors surrounding projects like “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” many viewers are wondering whether this really was the end after all.
