S.W.A.T. Season 9? EP Shawn Ryan Weighs In, And the Answer Isn’t Simple”

For years, fans of S.W.A.T. have become accustomed to expecting the unexpected. The series survived multiple cancellation scares before, making every renewal announcement feel like a miracle. So when questions about a possible Season 9 began circulating, executive producer Shawn Ryan offered an answer that reflected just how uncertain the show’s future had become.

Speaking while Season 8 was still airing, Ryan acknowledged that predicting the show’s fate had become nearly impossible. After seeing the series rescued more than once, he joked that it had been labeled a “final season” several times already, making it difficult for anyone to confidently predict what would happen next. At that stage, he stressed that everything remained uncertain rather than promising another renewal.

Ultimately, however, the outcome became clear. In March 2025, CBS canceled S.W.A.T. after its eighth season, bringing the network run to an end. Reports indicated that CBS chose not to pursue another renewal, with scheduling priorities and room for new programming contributing to the decision.

Ryan later expressed gratitude for everyone involved with the series while also sharing his disappointment over the cancellation. He praised the cast, crew, and longtime fans who had supported the show through eight seasons and multiple renewal campaigns, emphasizing how proud he was of the work they accomplished together.

Although Season 9 never materialized, the franchise did not end there.

Instead, Sony Pictures Television announced a new spinoff centered on Hondo, titled S.W.A.T. EXILES. The new series follows Hondo as he returns from retirement to lead an experimental tactical unit made up of younger recruits.

The spinoff also offers longtime viewers reasons for optimism. While Shemar Moore headlines the new series, additional familiar faces from the original cast have since been confirmed to appear, helping maintain a connection to the world fans followed for eight seasons.

In retrospect, Shawn Ryan’s cautious comments proved accurate. Rather than promising another season or declaring the franchise finished, he acknowledged that television can change quickly—and in the case of S.W.A.T., it certainly did. While the original series concluded after Season 8, the story continues in a different form, allowing Hondo’s journey to move forward while opening the door for new characters and occasional reunions with familiar teammates.

For longtime fans, the answer to whether there would be a Season 9 wasn’t simple because the future itself wasn’t. The original series may have ended, but the S.W.A.T. universe lives on through its next chapter.
